The situation in Ethiopia is no longer as unpredictable as it was. That is why UNE from 1 May 2022 is lifting the temporary suspension of the duty to return to Ethiopia. UNE will also resume the processing of cases.

Allthough the situation in Ethopia now is more stabile and clear, there is still uncertainty concerning the future development. There are also armed conflicts in the country. All this considered, UNE has concluded they have enough information about the situation to resume the processing of cases.

UNE suspended the duty to return to Ethiopia in November 2021 because of the uncertainty in the political and the security situation in the country.

The decision to lift the suspension applies to all persons who have received a final decision to return to Ethopia.

UNE will answer everyone who have asked for a reassessment of their case (request for reversal). Those who have requested a reversal, and have been given a deferred implementation, will have the right to stay in Norway until UNE have decided their case. Persons who are in Norway, and do not have a case pending in UDI or UNE, may send a request for reversal.

More on how to request for reversal

UNE monitors the situation in Ethiopia closely, and will make individual assessments in each case in light of the current situation.

An important source of country information for the UDI and UNE is reports prepared by Landinfo. Landinfo is an independent, professional unit that collects, assesses and analyses country information. In Landinfo’s report, dated 8.4.2022, you can read more about the development in Ethiopia since November 2021. The report is in Norwegian.
